A Couples Photo Shoot on Golden Gate Bridge
Three years ago, I walked on the Golden Gate Bridge for the first time — twenty-six years after I came to San Francisco. That was an incredible experience. The fog and the sun played along very nicely and made for a dynamic, moody setting. I was a bit starstruck. The bridge was so familiar — I've driven over it a thousand times. But when I stepped foot on it, it felt so much more real. Like seeing your favorite musician for the first time backstage after the concert.
That day I snapped a few photos with my phone that I really liked. I appreciated how many beautiful details and interesting angles you can capture that you don't see when you look at the bridge from the car or from a vista point.
After I got back into wedding, family, and portrait photography, I knew I wanted to photograph a couple on the Golden Gate Bridge. It turned out to not be so easy. If it's a busy wedding day, fitting in a trip to the bridge is hard, and even for an engagement shoot or just a couple's shoot — it's quite a commitment. You don't know what the weather will be like and what mood you'll capture in the photos. And whatever the look, it will almost certainly be chilly and windy. Also, unless you get a ride or are lucky enough to find parking next to the visitor center, it's a bit of a hike even just to get to the start of the bridge; and at the very least, you want to walk to the first tower. Ideally, halfway across the bridge. So, it's a commitment that not everyone is up for making.
Yesterday it finally happened! I suggested the Golden Gate Bridge as the location for our photoshoot and Max and Josefina were up for it.
I'm happy with how my first Golden Gate Bridge couples shoot went and I'm looking forward to more. Perhaps one day I'll shoot a ceremony there followed by a portrait session, or maybe a proposal, an engagement, or just a photoshoot for no specific reason other than to connect with your partner and capture a few authentic moments with each other and with this gorgeous cold, but warm in color and spirit, red-orange beast.
