Some wedding days just feel like sunshine, no matter the weather. Aditi and Grant couldn’t stop smiling from the moment we met in the registration area at San Francisco City Hall.

The Ceremony

With a small circle of family, it was the kind of day that makes a perfect case for City Hall — elegant, easy, and a joy to photograph. A tip for photographers: watch the light and speak up. The officiant directed Aditi and Grant to stand centered between two beautiful vases during the ceremony. It makes perfect sense geometrically, however there was harsh light coming from the window that lit the couple very unevenly. I asked them to move slightly which allowed for a much better light and I think it worked out really well. So, there will be times when you’ll just have to make it work with what you have, but remember: when you can take control to make thing better for the couple — do it.

The Grand Staircase—no waiting, all magic

If you’ve been to City Hall, you know the Grand Staircase is usually in high demand. We got lucky: no competition, no waiting—just room to breathe. We made a handful of timeless portraits and plenty of candid moments, then slipped to a side staircase for a quieter angle that shows off City Hall’s beautiful geometry

A quick step outside (and a cozy dash back in)

We popped out for a few frames outside, but it was a typical chilly San Francisco foggy day, so we quickly headed back in to wrap up among the soft, flattering light. Pro tip for future City Hall brides: bring a coat, cape, or scarf that you’ll love—you’ll stay comfortable, and it photographs beautifully.
